The Mets last week faced the reality of their disappointing campaign, sending Shawn Estes 55 to Cincinnati for prospects and players to be named later. Unlucky when not inconsistent, Estes was replaced in the rotation by Norfolkian Mike Bacsik 33, who probably won’t do any worse but ought not do much better. They then sent stinky, demoted throw-in Mark Little 21 to Arizona for a Stiff-to-be-Named-Later.

Bascik Steps in for Trash
In a bid to become the only component of the Roberto Alomar trade not to disappoint, Mike Bascik stepped in and made a successful Met debut last night. Bascik, swapping places with Tyler Walker 46 on the big club, looked effective in No. 33, last worn by Donne Wall.
Trader Steve Strikes Again
The Mets today pulled a shocking trade for Tribe second baseman Roberto Alomar, giving up outfielders Matt Lawton 23, Alex Escobar 25 and pitcher Jerrod Riggan 38. Alomar’s familiar No. 12 is available. The Mets also received a minor league outfielder and lefty pitcher Mike Bascik, who wore 51 briefly with the Indians last year. Those digits currently belong to Rick White.
