Couple of interesting things to point out here:
* Josh Satin tumbling from 3 all the way to 64
* Pedro Feliciano coming full-circle to reacquire the 55 first issued to him when he was a throw-in in the Shawn Estes Trade.
* Frank Francisco staying in 48 while newcomer Scott Atchison gets 50: I will bet that changes.
* Omar Quintanilla getting No. 3 while 6 (his last number) goes instead to Marlon Byrd. I would guess that changes, with Byrd taking whichever of 20 or 22 are surrendered by the backup catchers Recker and/or Powell.
* On the other hand, LaTroy Hawkins has been 22 or 32 for nearly his entire career, so looks like he’d take Powell’s 22.

Numbers like 7 should be off limits to coaches, unless they wore them for the team as players, or in cases of extreme greatness (even if Willie Mays hadn’t played for the Mets, if he joins the team as a coach, tear 24 off someone’s back and give it to him). Coaches should be given 50 and up, that’s it. If 53 and 54 were good enough for Eddie Yost and Rube Walker, respectively, those digits should be fine for coaches who did not help the team to two World Series in four years.

I agree with everything metsilverman says, and that is EXACTLY how Charlie Samuels, the ex-clubhouse manager, used to assign coaches numbers (until he got arrested, of course). 50s and up, unless you wore a lower number as a Met player before you became a coach. I don’t like the way the current clubhouse manager assigns numbers to coaches or players. Guys have rarely worn numbers in the 60s during the regular season…just check this site. Last year and the year before, we had Carson, Edgin, Elvin Ramirez, Egbert, Schwinden, Stinson all wearing these “spring training numbers” when lower numbers are available.

Wasn’t Samuels the one who gave coaches in the mid-80s numbers between 23 and 30–Valentine, Harrelson, Robinson, Stottlemyre?

Yes he was, but those were established major league veterans who (in my opinion) earned the right to wear the number they wore as players. I was OK with that….it is just my opinion.

Byrd is assigned to 6 but I’ve seen pictures of Wally Backman wearing his 6 at spring training. Guess they’ll share it for the spring until Wally heads to Vegas.
