Well, as suspected below last night’s marathon prompted the Mets to bring up another pitcher tonight — and the offense just might get a jolt too.
Tobi Stoner, who made a few late-season appearances last season wearing No. 29, was recalled. The surprise was that rather than demoting a gassed arm, the Mets designated flailing first baseman Mike Jacobs for assignment in order to make room. That leads to speculation that an offensive player would be recalled once the Mets depart St. Louis, first base prospect Ike Davis being the most intriguing option.
Davis has been wearing No. 20 up in Buffalo but there’s some speculation he could end up in No. 49, which his dad, reliever Ron Davis, wore for at least some of his career.(As pointed out below, Ron Davis wore 53, 39, 34, 55 and 33 in his career). No. 20 currently belongs to coach Howard Johnson. We’ve argued here before for No. 17, which would properly honor another terrific Met first baseman but require that Fernando Tatis changes his shirt. Stay tuned!

I believe Ron Davis actually wore number 39 for most of his career.

According to baseball-reference.com, Davis wore 53 and 39 with the Yankees (49 was Ron Guidry)…
34 and 39 with the Twins…
39 with the Cubs…
54 with the Dodgers and 33 with the Giants.
How about taking #8 out of mothballs? What’s Gary Carter going to do, pout and hold a press conference?
Thanks

Shoulda doublechecked that Davis thingy!
My bet is that Davis gets #3,

My bet is that Davis gets #3, as the only 2 numbers below 35 that are truly available are #2 and #3. All others are either taken, assigned to guys in the minors, or mothballed. Plus, their infield would then be 1,3,5,7 (Castillo, Davis, Wright, Reyes).

Give Ike 9, and Santos could always take 35 or 3 if he ever comes back.

Number 9, Number 9

I like Matt’s idea but I’m more inclined to agree with Tom on No. 9.
Power hitters (other than that Ruth guy and maybe Dale Murphy) don’t wear 3, especially as Mets. But 9 is a very first-basey number for Mets (Theodore, Torre, Zeile, Brazell).

I go with #10.
I think it is available. Andy Green wore it in spring Training and Sheff wore it in ’09.
Good power hitters number. Rusty was #10 his second time around.
His Dad’s numbers were pitchers numbers. #2 and #3 have become middle infield numbers (since Babe retired).
To give him #17 would be a slap at Tatis who Davis probably will eventually replace and unlikely he would take a fellow minor leaguers number in #9.
#10 sounds good as well… I

I doubt he’s going to be thinking “I can’t take a fellow minor leaguer’s number”… he’ll likely take whatever he finds in his locker and worry about a personal preference later.

Just read an announcement. Stoner goes down and Ike takes his uni. Hope they at least change the name on the back.

What’s wrong with 29? Maybe it’s in honor of Mickey Lolich, LOL!
