Torborgian Debut for Terry

10Terry Collins meets the press wearing the No. 10 jersey. If the Mets can somehow throw Luis Castillo overboard before opening day I could see him switching to his customary No. 1, otherwise, he’d be the second Mets manager to wear No. 10 and the first since Jeff Torborg donned it in 1992 and 1993. Just examining those parallels at a time like this is enough to scare you so I won’t.

Um, Good luck, Terry!

Update: Terry says he is wearing No. 10 as a tribute to Jim Leland, who gave Collins his start in the Pirates organization. “Plus my wife thinks I’m a 10.”

As long as it is not number 13.

    Ridiculous

It’s ridiculous to compare Collins to Torborg (or anyone else) based on a uniform number…

    Sure, it’s ridiculous but…

Ridiculous comparisons based on uni numbers is what I’ve done here for 11 years.

Here are a few spooky Torborg-Collins parallels:

    * Both Collins and Torborg were “outside hires” who succeeded a failed “inside” successor to a champion Mets team.

    * Both men were the first hires of a newly installed general manager.

    * Both men had managerial experience with two other teams before coming to the Mets.

    * Both men had six seasons of managerial experience before coming to the Mets (Collins has only 35 more games managed and just 2 fewer losses than Torborg at similar junctures)

    * Both men are connected with Sandy Koufax (Collins is a buddy; Torborg caught his no-hitter)

    * BOTH WEAR NUMBER 10 … and are the only Met managers to do so. …

    Spooky I tells ya

    Ridiculous comparisons…

    Throneberry and Jeter – now THERE’S a ridiculous Met-Yankee comparison, lol…

    Actually the man Collins

Actually the man Collins reminds me of isn’t Jeff Torborg, but his successor, Dallas Green.

Green too was the Organization Man who was going to whip the underperforming Mets into shape.

Didn’t pan out so good then. Hopefully Collins’ luck will be better (no jeromy burnitz to kick around this time).
