I admire his iconoclasm and desire to be dignified: It&#8217;s just that this team isn&#8217;t lending itself to either end. We don&#8217;t need\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nysun.com\/sports\/randolphs-style-doesnt-fit-mets\" target=\"_blank\">tortured interpretations\u00a0<\/a>of pinch-running tendencies and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sportsnetwork.com\/merge\/tsnform.aspx?c=sportsnetwork&amp;page=mlb\/news\/newstest.aspx?id=4151746\" target=\"_blank\">pretend outrage<\/a>\u00a0based on willfull misinterpretation of since retratcted quotes (complete with the &#8220;I-can&#8217;t-believe-I-used-to-idolize-this-guy&#8221; piling on). The team is at sea, and it doesn&#8217;t appear that Randolph is capable of rallying them to greater success anymore.<br \/>\nIf he&#8217;s lost the team, that&#8217;s when he goes, and no sooner.<\/p>\n<p>That job won&#8217;t be easier now that\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/mbtn.net\/player\/alou-moises\">Moises Alou<\/a>\u00a0is out injured again. The Mets on Thursday recalled\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/mbtn.net\/player\/casanova-raul\">Raul Casanova<\/a>\u00a0from AAA New Orleans to take his spot on the roster.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/mbtn.net\/images\/piazzaback.jpg\" width=\"163\" height=\"203\" \/>Interesting factoid about\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/mbtn.net\/player\/piazza-mike\">Mike Piazza<\/a>: He was assigned No. 31 in Los Angeles when it became available following\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/mbtn.net\/player\/mcdowell-roger\">Roger McDowell<\/a>&#8216;s switch from 31 to 17. McDowell, the former Met, switched to 17so as to honor his ex-Met teammate<a href=\"http:\/\/mbtn.net\/player\/hernandez-keith\">\u00a0Keith Hernandez<\/a>. Hernandez, of course, wore 17 in New York because 37 &#8212; his number in St. Louis &#8212; had been retired for\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/mbtn.net\/player\/stengel-casey\">Casey Stengel\u00a0<\/a>(and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/mbtn.net\/number\/7\">7<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/mbtn.net\/number\/27\">27\u00a0<\/a>and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/mbtn.net\/number\/47\">47\u00a0<\/a>were already issued).<\/p>\n<p>That means that\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/mbtn.net\/number\/17\">17\u00a0<\/a>and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/mbtn.net\/number\/31\">31\u00a0<\/a>&#8212; the numbers considered most likely for potential retirementfor the Mets &#8212; can be directly traced to the first number the team retired.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>You said it, Willie.
