{"id":730,"date":"2007-07-18T18:30:27","date_gmt":"2007-07-18T18:30:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.beta.mbtn.net\/?p=730"},"modified":"2013-11-30T18:32:37","modified_gmt":"2013-11-30T18:32:37","slug":"someone-must-pay","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.mbtn.net\/?p=730","title":{"rendered":"Someone Must Pay"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Back in the 80s, when comedy was funny, the\u00a0<em>National Lampoon<\/em>\u00a0ran a recurring comic called\u00a0<strong>Mr. Vengeance,<\/strong>\u00a0written and illustrated by Buddy Hickerson, who today illustrates\u00a0<em>The Quigmans<\/em>. This comic typically illustrated the title character suffering some minor misfortune in the opening panel, and devoted the rest of the comic to his hilarously violent overreactions to it, i.e.:\u00a0<em>\u201cSure enough, there is a blemish on his wax job. He decides to get EVEN!!\u201d<\/em>\u00a0This comic was genius in that it made the same joke over and over again \u2014 varying only over the question of how mundane the slight, and how creatively violent the reaction, would be each episode. Mr. Vengeance would torture not only those \u201cresponsible\u201d for his pain but, feeling rightous, anyone who\u2019d done anything wrong. \u201cSomeone MUST pay,\u201d was his credo.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m reminded of Mr. Vengeance today \u2014 and incredibly frustrated that I cannot locate a comic online* (\u201dsomeone WILL pay!\u201d) \u2014 as<a href=\"http:\/\/mbtn.net\/player\/anderson-marlon\">\u00a0<\/a><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/mbtn.net\/player\/anderson-marlon\">Marlon Anderson<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>returns to the Mets tonight to debut against the club that recently released him, the Dodgers. May Marlon find rightousness in his revenge. May David Newhan take it out on AAA pitching: He\u2019s the one DFAed to make room for Anderson. And may his remaining Met teammates take out their frustrations from the recently completed Padres series on the Dodgers.<\/p>\n<p>That was NOT a nice way to lose a series and whatever momentum Tuesday\u2019s win might have provided. And, really, shouldn\u2019t be enough that\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/mbtn.net\/player\/bell-heath\">Heath Bell<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>has a good season in an important role with his new team? Is it necessary that he chase down anyone with a rolling tape recorder to detail all manner of abuses and excuses stemming from his time at Shea? To kick\u00a0<em>us<\/em>\u00a0when we\u2019re down? Who does he think he is, Mr. Vengenance? To paraphrase another National Lampoon product of my childhood. \u201cHe can\u2019t say that about us. Only WE can say those things about us!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Well, as far I\u2019m concerned the time has come to get mad. To take some revenge, even if it\u2019s not on Heath Bell. To get EVEN!<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not clear what number Anderson will appear in tonight. Despite the ruminations below, one commenter thinks\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/mbtn.net\/number\/23\"><strong>23<\/strong>\u00a0<\/a>is likely because 8 is still in mothballs, and it may very well be. Anderson wore\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/mbtn.net\/number\/21\"><strong>21<\/strong>\u00a0<\/a>with the Dodgers earlier this year (not available here).
