{"id":690,"date":"2007-04-18T17:22:37","date_gmt":"2007-04-18T17:22:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.beta.mbtn.net\/?p=690"},"modified":"2013-11-30T17:23:48","modified_gmt":"2013-11-30T17:23:48","slug":"they-call-him-the-streak","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.mbtn.net\/?p=690","title":{"rendered":"They Call Him the Streak"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Congratulations to<a href=\"http:\/\/mbtn.net\/player\/wright-david\">\u00a0<strong>David Wright,<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0whose single last night extended his hitting streak to 24 games, tying a Met record shared by\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/mbtn.net\/player\/brooks-hubie\"><strong>Hubie Brooks<\/strong>\u00a0<\/a>(1984) and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/mbtn.net\/player\/piazza-mike\"><strong>Mike Piazza<\/strong>\u00a0<\/a>(1999).<\/p>\n<p>Leaving aside for a second the idiotic debate over whether Wright\u2019s \u201caround the corner\u201d hitting streak should \u201ccount\u201d\u2013 the correct answer is, of course it should \u2013 and the larger question as to whether random counting records like this are important \u2013 they\u2019re not \u2013 it does provide an example to muse briefly on the men who set the records.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s easy to associate David Wright with Hubie Brooks. Both were organization-bred third basemen wearing single-digit uniform numbers. And at the time they set hitting streaks each would be considered \u201canswers\u201d for the organization\u2019s storied struggle to find third basemen.
