{"id":2093,"date":"2014-05-15T08:38:22","date_gmt":"2014-05-15T14:38:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.mbtn.net\/?p=2093"},"modified":"2015-04-20T19:31:32","modified_gmt":"2015-04-21T01:31:32","slug":"saved","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.mbtn.net\/?p=2093","title":{"rendered":"Saved"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.beta.mbtn.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/44.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-130\" src=\"https:\/\/www.beta.mbtn.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/44.gif\" alt=\"44\" width=\"60\" height=\"48\" \/><\/a>It&#8217;s harrowing at times, and probably\u00a0not entirely by design, but hats off to the threadbare Mets for demonstrating\u00a0how inconsequential the whole notion of the closer role is this year, seeing as they&#8217;ve essentially stashed their worst pitchers there since the early injury to <strong>Bobby Parnell<\/strong> and are still hanging in there.<\/p>\n<p>And as though to prove it, after Wednesday&#8217;s game (and Monday&#8217;s so-called &#8220;save&#8221;) they cashiered closer-of-the-moment <strong>Kyle Farnsworth<\/strong> so as to call up their own questionable relief talent (<strong>Josh Edgin<\/strong>) and save a few bucks. Who&#8217;s next in line? Who cares? It&#8217;s clear that without a true standout, and by avoiding the total gascans (or reassigning\u00a0and or releasing them when appropriate) Whomever Pitches That Night will convert saves at about the same rate as That\u00a0Other Guy.\u00a0It&#8217;s true the Mets have had an abysmal conversion rate on saves this year\u00a0(47%) but the leaguewide average isn&#8217;t much to look at either (64%) and you figure the process of competition and tinkering &#8212; particularly at the dawn of a wave of incoming pitching talent &#8212; will improve the performance over time. Right now they could turn to veteran mediocrities like <strong>Jose Valverde<\/strong> or <strong>Daiskue Matsuzaka<\/strong> &#8212; or promising-but-erractic performers\u00a0like <strong>Jeurys Familia<\/strong> or <strong>Jennry Mejia<\/strong>. I have confidence that can all get about 64%. It really doesn&#8217;t matter.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.beta.mbtn.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/66.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-152\" src=\"https:\/\/www.beta.mbtn.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/66.gif\" alt=\"66\" width=\"56\" height=\"48\" \/><\/a>At any rate, I&#8217;m not losing sleep over the whacking of Kyle Farnsworth, yet another complete disaster to have worn No. 44 for the Mets.
