For the Mets, the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/mbtn.net\/number\/44\">44 jersey<\/a>\u00a0has often found its way onto the backs of guys who only\u00a0<em>think\u00a0<\/em>they&#8217;re power hitters.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/mbtn.net\/images\/cameron44.jpg\" width=\"180\" height=\"180\" align=\"left\" \/>There was\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/mbtn.net\/player\/payton-jay\">Jay Payton<\/a>, who had all the muscle of a power hitter but a delicate frame and a line-drive bat.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/mbtn.net\/player\/thompson-ryan\">Ryan Thompson<\/a>\u00a0could hit it out of the park in interviews but was never as ferocious at game time.<a href=\"http:\/\/mbtn.net\/player\/milledge-lastings\">Lastings Milledge<\/a>\u00a0and his similarly powerful mouth wore out his welcome in less than two years (and only 11 Met home runs).<a href=\"http:\/\/mbtn.net\/player\/cameron-mike\">Mike Cameron\u00a0<\/a>slammed 30 home runs in 2004 but his hardest hit as a Met was a gruesome collison with teammate Carlos Beltran in 2005.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/mbtn.net\/images\/milledge.jpg\" width=\"164\" height=\"200\" align=\"right\" \/>What&#8217;s a Met 44? It&#8217;s\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/mbtn.net\/player\/johnson-howard\">Howard Johnson<\/a>\u00a0in May of 1991 switching to No. 44 in an attempt to jump-start his game, only to scurry back to his familiar\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/mbtn.net\/number\/20\">No. 20<\/a>\u00a0in less than a week when his wife reminded him her jewelry all included the No. 20. It was reserve catcher\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/mbtn.net\/player\/chiti-harry\">Harry Chiti<\/a>, acquired from the Cleveland Indians in 1962 for a player to be named later &#8212; Harry Chiti, and the Mets would get fleeced. It was four different players as recently as 2008, and I can barely remember any of them:\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/mbtn.net\/player\/clark-brady\">Brady Clark<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/mbtn.net\/player\/armas-tony\">Tony Armas<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/mbtn.net\/player\/kunz-eddie\">Eddie Kunz<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/mbtn.net\/player\/knight-brandon\">Brandon Knight<\/a>. They threaten to join\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/mbtn.net\/player\/lomon-kevin\">Kevin Lomon<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/mbtn.net\/player\/filer-tom\">Tom Filer<\/a>and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/mbtn.net\/player\/rauch-bob\">Bob Rauch<\/a>, to name three Met pitchers who wore 44 in my fan lifetime and of whom I retain no specific memory whatsoever.<\/p>\n<p>Like everything in Mets history, 44 was good for a stretch in the mid-1980s &#8212;\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/mbtn.net\/player\/darling-ron\">Ron Darling<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/mbtn.net\/player\/cone-david\">David Cone<\/a>\u00a0each wore it before switching to other unis &#8212; but it wasn&#8217;t long before 44 was again the domain of guys like\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/mbtn.net\/player\/burke-tim\">Tim Burke<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/mbtn.net\/player\/cangelosi-john\">John Cangelosi<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/mbtn.net\/player\/bell-jay\">Jay Bell<\/a>, who I still can&#8217;t believe chose sticking out to the bitter end of the 2003 campaign over retirement, or the Mets for allowing him .<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s into this dysfuctional family that<strong>\u00a0Jason Bay<\/strong>\u00a0officially arrived in a Met press event today.\u00a0<em>Bonne chance,\u00a0<\/em>Jason!
