{"id":1321,"date":"2010-01-03T19:53:05","date_gmt":"2010-01-03T19:53:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.beta.mbtn.net\/?p=1321"},"modified":"2013-12-08T19:55:08","modified_gmt":"2013-12-08T19:55:08","slug":"bobby-in-disguise","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.mbtn.net\/?p=1321","title":{"rendered":"Bobby in Disguise"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/mbtn.net\/images\/knight.jpg\" width=\"200\" height=\"264\" \/>We recently got an inquiry from a reader who asked about the circumstances around Met coaches\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/mbtn.net\/player\/valentine-bobby\">Bobby Valentine<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/mbtn.net\/player\/robinson-bill\">Bill Robinson<\/a>\u00a0switching uniform numbers before the 1985 season.<\/p>\n<p>You might recall that in 1984, Robinson, then in his first season as the Mets hitting and first-base coach, was wearing\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/mbtn.net\/number\/26\">No. 26<\/a>\u00a0while Valentine was issued\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/mbtn.net\/number\/22\">No. 22<\/a>\u00a0until the Mets traded for\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/mbtn.net\/player\/knight-ray\">Ray Knight<\/a>\u00a0late in the season. Valentine at that point switched to\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/mbtn.net\/number\/28\">28<\/a>\u00a0to allow Knight to wear his customary 22.<\/p>\n<p>By the beginning of 1985, Valentine gave up 28 for\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/mbtn.net\/number\/2\">No. 2<\/a>and Robinson moved into 28, a jersey he&#8217;d wear for the next five years. No. 26 wasn&#8217;t issued agin until\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/mbtn.net\/player\/leach-terry\">Terry Leach<\/a>\u00a0arrived in July.<\/p>\n<p>A little bit of research explains Robinson&#8217;s preference for 28: He&#8217;d worn that number as a player for the best years of his career with the Pirates. It was available with the Mets in &#8217;84 but not until\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/mbtn.net\/player\/holman-scott\">Scott Holman<\/a>\u00a0was released at the end of spring training. Holman&#8217;s subsequent re-signing as a minor leaguer may have kept the number in near-term mothballs.<\/p>\n<p>Anyone with memories of this situation- &#8211; or even why Valentine seemed to prefer No. 2 &#8212; is welcome to chime in.
