Seems we were fortunate to catch Philly while\u00a0<strong>Chase Utley<\/strong>\u00a0suffered a severe case of the sucks, but if 2007 taught us anything it&#8217;s that the winners can&#8217;t choose how ugly the losers turn out to be.<\/p>\n<p>With the uniform number roulette temporaily slowed down &#8212; at least until they call up a guy to take\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/mbtn.net\/player\/martinez-pedro-0\">Pedro Martinez<\/a>&#8216;s again-delayed start on Saturday (word coming in as as I write this is\u00a0<strong>Brandon Knight<\/strong>, currently wearing\u00a0<strong>No. 15\u00a0<\/strong>for your New Orleans Zephyrs), or\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/mbtn.net\/player\/curch-ryan\">Ryan Church<\/a>\u00a0arrives, or the trade deadline occurs&#8230; or whatever &#8212; we have a few uni oddities to ponder.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/mbtn.net\/images\/reyes9.jpg\" width=\"120\" height=\"150\" align=\"right\" \/>Reader Michael sent along these here images of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/mbtn.net\/player\/reyes-jose\">Jose Reyes<\/a>\u00a0wearing unfamilar numbers. While Reyes has occupied\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/mbtn.net\/number\/7\">No. 7\u00a0<\/a>for his entire Met career (except for Jackie Robinson Day this season), these are extrametular:\u00a0<strong>No. 9<\/strong>for his stint with the Dominican Republic in the World Baseball Classic; and<strong>No. 28<\/strong>, I presume, from Binghamton prior to his callup but I&#8217;ll let you experts out there tell me for sure.<\/p>\n<p>The below team shot of hideously-dressed 1979 ballplayers on a tour of Japan, first published on\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.uniwatchblog.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Uni Watch<\/a>\u00a0this week, subsequently generated a fair amount of discussion at the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cranepoolforum.net\/\" target=\"_blank\">Crane Pool Forum<\/a>. The multistriped hats aren&#8217;t 1976 pillbox throwbacks but renderings in the then-contemporary style in Japan (the 1976 lids had three stripes, not five). But what knocks me out are the contrasting styles of the numerals on the Mets jerseys worn by\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/mbtn.net\/player\/stearns-john\">John Stearns<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/mbtn.net\/player\/youngblood-joel\">Joel Youngblood<\/a>, respectively (see a larger image\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/farm4.static.flickr.com\/3070\/2694883358_522326d0bd_o.png\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>).
