Sun, 08/26/2007 - 11:24pm — mbtn01Just asking, but is Sandy Alomar Sr. the world’s worst third-base coach?
Looks like tonight’s big series in Philly will begin with Paul LoDuca 16 back in action and the Son of the World’s Worst Third-Base Coach designated for assignment. That would free up 19 for Jeff Conine should he want to wear it. Also look for Endy Chavez 10 to return during this series perhaps taking the place of tonight’s pitcher, Brian Lawrence 54. (pure speculation on my part here). Or wishing. Or whatever.
Bazooka Joe and the 800th Met
Sun, 03/25/2007 - 3:00am — mbtn01Other first-time Mets would appear to be Damion Easley (No. 2), David Newhan (17), Aaron Sele (32), Scott Schoeneweis (60), Chan Ho Park (61) and “Bazooka” Joe Smith, who is, for all we know, still going around in the No. 70 jersey they assign to longshot bullpen wannabees. I made up that “Bazooka” nickname by the way, sort of. Remember Joe Smith, the basketball player? When he was a student at Maryland the school paper held a nickname contest to give him more pizzazz where ‘Bazooka’ was among the choices. I don’t think it ever stuck with that Joe Smith. We can’t let it go this time.
So what number does Bazooka Joe Smith get?
I don’t even have to look it up to tell you this is the first season the Mets began a year with two guys wearing numbers in the 60s.

Willie
and the Boz (Feb. 26): Willie Randolph,
as quoted by Bill Madden in the Daily News: "I'm gonna wear No. 12.
Why? You remember Ken Boswell? Second baseman on the '69 team? He was my
favorite player growing up. No. 12. It's a nice number."
We remember Ken Boswell too, and even if his sideburns might not fly in Willie's clubhouse, it speaks well of the new Met manager that he has a sense of his place in history. This is probably a natural result of the era we grew up, but 12 has always seemed more Boswellian to us than Kent-like or Alomarish. And as glorified ticket salesman Darryl Strawberry makes a grand reappearance at Shea this weekend, may it serve as a reminder of this team's horribly miscast former manager, who wore No. 18 but was no George Theodore either.
We found Madden's piece, by the way, from a link at the extraordinary new blog co-authored by veteran MBTN reader Greg -- highly recommended for fans of good writing and historical Metdom.
October 2004
Mon, 11/01/2004 - 3:00am — mbtn0152 and Out (Oct. 12): We neglected to mention the last-inning, last-day appearance of catcher Joe Hietpas, who narrowly became the 52nd and final Met of 2004, its 747th overall, and the 17th No. 10 in team history. Also, we owe goodbyes to Todd Zeile 27, John Franco 45 (maybe?) and probably, lots of others who've played their last game in a Met uni. In the meantime, we'll wish good luck to the RED SOX, who begin the ALCS against the Yanks tonight, and humbly suggest that as Omar Minaya retools the team for 2005 his first move involves re-hiring Bobby Valentine, whom (told ya so) just about everyone missed more than they realized the regrettable day they fired him. Hey Charlie -- keep no. 2 warm.
Updates: Thanks to a note from MBTN reader Ken, we're updating our records on Dan Norman. Norman wore 33 during September callups in 1977 and 1978, and didn't switch to 8 until 1979. Thanks!
September-October 2002
Fri, 11/01/2002 - 3:00am — mbtn01Howe Now: (Oct. 26). Here's former A's and Astros manager Art Howe accepting the No. 18 jersey to manage the Mets next year. Howe will take over for the victimized and jobless Bobby Valentine 2, whom the Mets whacked the day after the season ended. (Coaches Charlie Hough 54 and Tom Robson 57 summarily left of their own accord). The move temporarily leaves Jeff D'Amico numberless, although he may wind up jobless as well.
Howe
becomes the 17th Met manager (and the first to wear No. 18). See more at
MBTN's All-time Coaches &
Managers list.
Strange but True: (Sept. 12) The Mets today called up promising minor league pitcher Pat Strange and issued him No. 38. Strange got the call as an emergecy reliever in light of Steve Trachsel's injury yesterday. Jae Wong Seo served the same purpose earlier this year, also wearing 38. Also: Grant Roberts 36 is back from the DL.
