Mets by the Numbers
Since 1999, the Mets website that counts
Nine Men In (Updated-- again)
Sun, 08/31/2008 - 12:50pm — mbtn01
Thanks to Gene for the title and inspiration: The Mets on Monday are expected to activate nine and/or returning new players as rosters expand. Below are my predictions for their unis. Be like Gene, hurry and make yours before gametime Monday!
| Player | Actual |
Notes |
| Jon Niese, LHP |
||
| Bobby Parnell, RHP |
39 | His number throughout the minors. Guessed right! |
| Ricardo Rincon, LHP |
73 | That's his number... and still is |
| Al Reyes, RHP |
||
| Carlos Muniz, RHP |
32 | His number previously |
| Gustavo Molina, C |
||
| Ramon Martinez, INF |
I barely knew we had this guy |
|
| Argenis Reyes, INF |
4 | Right where we left off |
| Marlon Anderson, UT |
My mistake! |

Marlon has worn #9 all
Marlon has worn #9 all season has he not?
wow!!! Marlon Anderson #18
wow!!! Marlon Anderson #18 you should know better. Jon Niese I'm thinking #22 and Hoping Nick Evans gets a new number next year.
Another question -- the Mets
Another question -- the Mets will need to free up five slots on the 40 man roster. They can get three by moving Orlando Hernandez, Jason Vargas, and Matt Wise from the 15 day DL to the 60 day DL. I'm guessing they also release Trot Nixon. Where does the fifth come from? Release Ruddy Lugo? Adam Bostick?
Niese is too good of a
Niese is too good of a prospect to get stuck with a ST number.
I think he gets #47 (the only number 1-50 to go unissued this year, aside from the retired and semi retired - 8, 24, 31).
Glenn, I was thinking 22 for
Glenn, I was thinking 22 for Niese because of Al Leiter, but 47 is a very good call.
Numbers of call
Numbers of call ups:
Neise---47
Parnell--39
Rincon--73
Al Reyes--29 ( he wore 28 in Tampa Bay)
Muniz--32
Molina--12 ( Randolph's former #)
Martinez--22
Argenis Reyes--4
Anderson--9
Others if called up:
Kunz--44
Casanova--30
Lugo--49
I would like to see F-Mart get # 24 when he eventually comes up. They gave it to Rickey, so it's time to get it back in circulation. I cringe when I see Tatis or anyone else in 17. Same thing with 36. Retire them already, along with 31. Not sure about retiring number 8 for Carter, tho.
Whoops confused on Marlon
Whoops confused on Marlon there.
Add Brandon Knight and his
Add Brandon Knight and his bronze medal to the staff as well. Since Danny the Murph has usurped his number 28 he'll be looking for new digits, and as such take one baby step toward his own McKnightmare.
I know it's a holiday, but would it kill the Mets to have some intern update the roster on the web site?
Screwed up again. I thought
Screwed up again. I thought that last reply were the actual numbers.
OK, Based on the roster
OK, Based on the roster (which is incomplete) and Gary Cohen's announcement, here are the newbies (and, uh, returnbies):
Niese 49
Parnell 39
Rincon 73
Al Reyes 36
Knight 44
Molina 29
R. Martinez 22
R. Heinous Reyes 4
Anderson 9
Muniz 32
Heinous? Leave "Baba Looey"
Heinous? Leave "Baba Looey" alone (no, I'm not referring to Howard Stern's producer-that's Baba Booey-Baba Looey is Quick Draw McGraw's sidekick in the Hanna Barbera Cartoons-with Jose as Quick Draw-except when hits a triple and turns into El Kabong (using a bat instead of banjo))-besides, 4 is one of my fave numbers (it's the month I'm born in).
I was at the game Knight pitched wearing 28-that was one sick game. Could have used some of those pitching call ups instead of Heilman going on fumes as the last man standing and then (to use an old euphemism for Mikey from "the Dude"-speaking of Mikey, when are the Mets going to retire 31? And 8 for the Kid while they are at it? (The 8 is for his birthday-BTW, same as mine (4/8)). And finally put us out of our misery and stick 24 on the wall for Willie?) the monster got out of the cage for the Cards (aka Pujols) and we lose.
Rincon wearing 73-only the Gambler wore it before because he couldn't wear 37 due to Casey. Too bad he couldn't unscramble that last pitch to Andruw in '99.

mbtn01 this was fun. I'm glad that I'm not the only one who loves knowing the numbers on the players. 47 for Niese was better.

Sentence of the year!
I like that - Baba Looey and, as he called his partner, 'Qweeks Draw.' The best part of watching the 'El Kabong' episodes was the pause between the 'El' and the 'Kabong. Priceless timing.
