Mets by the Numbers
Since 1999, the Mets website that counts
June 2004
Comings and Goings (June 26): Onto the disabled list: Karim Garcia 20. Off it: Orber Moreno 49. Designated for assignment: Ice Williams 21. Rescued from oblivion: Tom Wilson 6.
Welcome
Home (June 20): Jose Reyes finally
returned to the Mets. To make room for him the team designated catcher
Tom
Wilson for assignment, leaving the team temporarily with two catchers
and six outfielders and importantly, freeing up uniform No. 6 for
another issue. Reyes looked great in 7, hustling in one run and
tripling to set up the gamewinner.
In another move the Mets once again sent Pedro Feliciano 55 back to Norfolk before seeing any action in New York. That Feliciano's replacement, Jose Parra, saw action in his first opportunity probably didn't make the return trip any sweeter for Pedro. Parra, a veteran righthanded reliever who was closing in Norfolk, suited up in the dreaded No. 46.
Doggie Bagged (Updated June 19): The Mets today addressed poor production from the lineup by taking a chance on Houston outfielder Richard Hidalgo, acquired from Houston for meaty reliever David Weathers 35 and minor league pitcher Jeremy Griffiths, who had a brief trial last season. Hidalgo, who befitting his nickname was in Jimy Williams' doghouse, is expected to report to the Mets soon and could suit up in his familiar No. 15 -- a jersey recently turned in by fired Met batting coach Denny Walling. The Mets made room for Hidalgo by finally losing their 12th pitcher: Tyler Yates 33 was sent back down and Pedro Feliciano 55 was recalled.
The Joy of Six (June 17): For the second time in a week, the third time this season and a team-record 30th time in team history the Mets have another 6 in the house -- veteran backup catcher Tom Wilson, recalled from Norfolk Wednesday to take the place of unrelated veteran backup catcher Vance Wilson 3, who pulled a hamstring on Tuesday. The latest offering of the cursed No. 6 jersey makes 2004 the third Metly year in which No. 6 has been issued three times in one season: It happened in 1962 (Cliff Cook, Jim Marshall and Rick Herrscher) and again in 1990 (Mike A. Marshall, Alex Treviño (right), and Darren Reed). Ricky Gutierrez and Gerald Williams have already worn 6 this season.
Moreno Out, Yates Back (June 10) The Mets today placed Orber Moreno 49 on the 15-day disabled list with a sore shoulder, which might, but probably doesn't, explain his odd usage of late. In his place the Mets recalled Tyler Yates 33, who's been recast as a reliever after an unsuccessful turn in the starting rotation earlier this year.
It'll Have You In Stitches (June 9): The latest installment of Paul Lukas' incomparable Uni Watch column, published today at Slate.com, features a Metly discussion with the Queens-based embroiderer whose job it is to sew names and numbers on uniforms. He speaks of the panic with which he rushed Cory Lidle's 1997 duds off to Houston, which may explain how Lidle wound up with the uncomplicated No. 11 -- the lowest-ever number for a Met pitcher. Check it out here!
Danny Garcia Down, Gerald Williams Up (Updated June 10): In what seems to be an overly enthusiastic endorsement of recent hot stretches by Wigginton & Zeile, the Mets last night optioned backup infielder Danny Garcia 12 to Norfolk and in his place called up well-traveled batless veteran outfielder Gerald Williams, who as a likely short-time visitor took the oft-issued No. 6. Update: Williams appeared in the dugout tonight (June 10) wearing No. 21, politely leaving 6 for the next visitor.
