Clip & Save: 2021 Mets Spring Roster

Well here it is, the Mets released a spring training roster.

As always this is subject to change but addresses a few mysteries and might be useful if you happen to be on your way to Florida next week (not me– hiding in the basement still).

I missed the obvious that Jonathan Villar might take over No. 1, and can report out friend Gene was right when he pegged Albert Almora taking over No. 4. Not weird that David Peterson abandons 77 but kinda weird he settles on Brian Schneider’s number 23 as both a player a coach: Watch for a potential switch there. NRI Jerry Blevins gets 26 which would be his third number with the Mets after previous appearances in 13 and 39. As noted Robert Gsellman gets a new number — 44 — while moving for Trevor May, and maybe new opportunity as word comes down that the borrowed time on Seth Lugo’s elbow has expired.

We’re also surprised to see Jordan Yamamoto assigned 45 and not 50, Miguel Castro or no. Sam Williams inheriting Yoenis Cespedes’ 52; Aaron Loup in Matz’ old shirt. Tip of the cap to Marcel Renteria, possessor of the highest number in camp at 97.

68 players in camp! That’s a lot. Add in 14 uniformed non-players, 6 formally retired numbers, and 4 informally retired numbers – and you get a total of 92. So there are only EIGHT available numbers! They are: 7,29,55,69,70,84,98,99.

At this rate, soon they’ll be assigning duplicate numbers as in college football.

  2. Jim A says:

I would add that it is entirely appropriate that Brian Schneider should give up his number to David Peterson. A good coach is a servant-leader who subordinates himself to his players. The manager,on the other hand, should never give up his number to anybody.

  3. jrgame says:

Blevins defers to current occupants, yet keeps multiple of 13. Respect.

  4. Jim A says:

Tommy Hunter signs with Mets and was probably certain that his #96 would be available. Sorry man.

Some additional Clip and Save notes for your consideration:

    4 – Was Jed Lowrie
    7 – Was Marcus Stroman
    12 – Was Eduardo Nunez
    16 – Was Jake Marisnick
    18 – Was Ryan Cordell
    21 – Was Todd Frazier*
    26 – Was Robinson Chirinos
    35 – Was Jared Hughes
    43 – Was Erasmo Ramirez
    49 – Was Ariel Jurado
    58 – Was Hensley Meulens
    59 – Was Jeremy Accardo
    61 – Was Walker Lockett
    71 – Was Hunter Strickland

    * The numerical roster lists Frazier last seen wearing #33. However, I am pretty sure he switched back to 21 after Billy Hamilton got 86’d.

  6. Gene F. says:

New guy Kevin Pillar has worn 1, 5, 11 and 22 in his career, all of which are assigned or waiting for retirement. I was thinking 90 would be a good number for him, for if you’ve seen a picture of young Kevin his face consists of four right angles.

  7. Matt B says:

I think they just need to give Pillar #7, and not a ridiculously high number. Enough with resting it for Reyes because Stroman switched from it to #0 and said it was in someway honoring Reyes by NOT wearing it. Makes no sense. Seems like someone would WANT to wear it to honor him.

  8. Jim A says:

Oswalt has cleared waivers and was outrighted to Syracuse with a camp invite. Figure he reclaims his #55.

Brach has been released, I’m guessing Montgomery gets his #29.

Hunter probably gets #96 (his last number with the Phillies, for some reason), bumping Baty to 98 or whatever.

Pillar gets #7 because there isn’t anything else left. I don’t think Reyes deserves to have his number semi-retired.

So, if all that happens, then we are down to just FOUR available camp numbers: 69, 70, 84, and 99. Plus whatever number is freed up by whomever is DFA’d to make room for Pillar.

  9. Chris says:

They have two assistant pitching coaches?

  10. Bill M says:

Tommy Hunter gets 29, Mike Montgomery gets 70. Pillar will be interesting. Could Heredia get DFA’d & Pillar get 15? Just a thought.

    • Jim A says:

As of today, the 60 Day IL is activated. Mets could create a spot for Pillar by moving Syndergaard to the 60 day. That would make him unavailable until the end of May, but I think that’s a given.

  11. Chris says:

    #99 for Walker?

  12. Chris says:

    #99 for Walker?

  13. Matt B says:

Gene–I love the Turk references! How about this–Pillar seems to like #11, which is currently assigned to Drury, who has never worn it before. Pillar asks for #11, and Drury ends up in #7. My best guess!
