The Dead Line

35They’re still capable of looking like they might make a run but losing 20 of their last 30 and everything to the godforsaken Diamondbacks smells a lot like the Mets are going to fall short this season. With only hours remaining until the trade deadline I’d be strongly tempted to see what Pedro Feliciano and Frankie Rodriguez would bring back on the trade market, not that I’d expect that kind of vision from Omar (or that another team could be convinced that the $29 million Rodriguez has coming to him is even a fraction of what he’s worth). It might be different were the Mets able to start that run I’ve been talking about for weeks now, but they just haven’t, and I’m afraid it’s over.

The only new personnel so far is Jesus Feliciano, returning to take the place of Jason Bay, who went to the disabled list with a concussion. The Mets also on Friday traded AAA first baseman Mike Jacobs to Toronto for a Player To Be Named Later: It’s hard to believe Jacobs was the opening-day first baseman on this team.

Opening day first baseman and cleanup hitter, too

    Give it a week

Mets are now in the eye of the storm. If there’s ever a time to turn it around, this is the week. They go up against the Braves and Phillies, teams they are much more familiar with than the Diamondbacks. If they go 5-1, they’re totally back in the ballgame. If they go 2-4, then they aren’t doing anything else this year. Now that the deadline passed, they know who is going to be here and who isn’t. Jerry doesn’t have to guess who’s coming or going, nor if he’s going to lose his job. (That happens in October). I predict they have one good stretch left, and that happens….NOW!

I’m no more skeptical going into this week than I’ve been but recognize they can give themselves a real shot if they play well.

    But…

    Yeah, butt…

    “But…”

The appropriate word here is “butt,” as in what the team needs to pull its collective head out of…

Really awful. It’s as if they

Really awful. It’s as if they execute only poorly enough to be certain they lose.

At this point, you’ve got to consider Perez, Francoeur, Cora and maybe Castillo as complete lost causes in need of pink slips and Barajas a failure on balance. None of their presences on their own are so horrible (I mean, I was afraid Francoeur would end up this way, and didn’t like the length of the Castillo deal from Day 1) but all of them together is a real indictment of Omar’s tenure and pretty much the reason we’re a .500, 4th place team tonight.

Great article. Terrible game. I think Cohen said it best last night – he’s never seen a team get worse when their starters came back. Bring on the kids and let’s see what they can do. Release Castillo and Perez, bring up Tejada, start Thole and where the hell is Fartinez? Get him up here. Commit to the kids, even during an 0 for 10 streak and let’s see what we’ve got. That’s what I would do.

Regardless of how this season ends

You gotta love Wagner blowing a game for the Braves to the Mets. You got Francoer, a Mets favorite (even if he isn’t very good) versus one of the most detestable Mets ever(despite being pretty good) we ever had in Wagner.

    I’m totally agree with

    I’m totally agree with you.

    Wagner not bad…

Sorry, but I disagree about Wagner being “detestable” as a Met…he gave his best effort and had the misfortune of a major injury…most of us fans have no clue what it takes to what these guys do for a living…
