It’s the offense, stupid! Terrible bullpen notwithstanding. Always has been.

    The Curse of #17?

OK, bear with me here, as I write this on September 17, 2008

Last year, when the Mets suffered their historic collapse, they blew a 7 game lead with 17 games to go.

This year, the Mets have 12 games to go. They have lost 4 of their last 5 and have fallen out of first place. This year’s swoon again began with 17 games to go in the season.

Now Fernando Tatis, who wears number 17 with the Mets, is now out for the season with a separated shoulder.

Since the Mets declined to resign Keith Hernandez at the end of the 1989 season the Mets have been a cursed franchise and have failed to win a World Series title.

Maybe it is time for the Mets to retire number 17 in an effort to exorcise this curse?

PS – Keith Hernandez was the subject of another curse pertaining to the St. Louis Cardinals trading him to the Mets

    I wouldn’t give the Mets

I wouldn’t give the Mets credit for this, but hapless players wearing 17 was a Mets tradition long before Hernandez came around.

I am mildly amused that this tradition continues in front of Hernandez. Maybe someday, if he puts in a few more years of service to the team in the booth, and avoids saying something outrageous, they retire 17 in his honor. But I’d almost prefer they retire the symbolic 86 for all of them, so as not to unnecessarily elevate Hernandez above guys like Strawberry and Gooden, or Carter, or Mookie, all of whom have a wobbly argument.

And I hope we’re not cursed. Got to hit every inning, every night!

    Does the curse explain why

Does the curse explain why the Mets didn’t win, with Hernandez, from 87-89?
